Onsite Degauss Hard Disk Drive

degaussing

Degaussing a Hard Disk Drive (HDD) means to demagnetize or erase the magnetic fields on the disk, effectively wiping out all the data stored on it. This process is also known as "demagnetizing" or "erasing" the disk.

Here's what happens when you degauss an HDD:

1. Magnetic field removal: The degaussing process removes the magnetic fields that store data on the disk. This is done by applying a strong, alternating magnetic field to the disk, which randomizes the magnetic domains and erases the data.
2. Data destruction: As a result, all data on the disk, including files, programs, and operating systems, is completely destroyed and becomes unrecoverable.

Degaussing is often used for:

- Secure data destruction: To ensure that sensitive data is completely erased and cannot be recovered, degaussing is used in industries that handle confidential information, such as government, finance, and healthcare.
- Disk disposal: Before disposing of an HDD, degaussing is used to ensure that all data is erased, making it safe to dispose of the disk without worrying about data breaches.

Degaussing is a permanent process and cannot be undone. Once an HDD is degaussed, all data on it is lost forever.
